Evaluation 7 Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product?

When looking back to the start of this project it allows me to realise the transition of my skills. We were given a simple preliminary task to present to our teachers and friends showing our ideas and to ensure we had remembered to include everything we needed. Our preliminary was presented as a powerpoint, it is clear how unexperienced we were as a group with cameras and technology when looking back. The preliminary was very simple and consequently boring, our final piece is intense and has meaning to it.

I have learned a lot from this project. In the beginning i did not know how to use the camera equipment, i had know director skills and i hadn't experienced working against time. By the end i had learnt all three things and now feel confident around cameras. Without having the preliminary task in the beginning i don't think the project would of had any structure to it and therefore would have taken very long to complete.

Evaluation 7- Looing back at your preliminary task, whta do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product ?

If im looking back at the preliminary task that i had undertaken, it was a task that was given to my group by our teacher. Someone had to read a newspaper and respond to it in a thrilling way. In our group Shekira was the key charctaer and she acted like she saw something (thrilling headline) and responding to it in a thrilling way.

This task helped me to understand the camera and how to use it. using the zoom feature and panning technique i was able to film the prelimniary task with ease. Though it could not be uploaded the preliminary task was a working progress, the camera work was shaky because it was not on a tripod and the mise en scene was not professional because there was things in the way and on the table.

Evaluation 1- In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products ?

In comparison toour movie.. this short trailer based on Nigerian Black Magic (JuJu ) has certain aspects which are similar to our low budget student film. We break down the barriers and also in a certain light make it more stereotypical.

At the start of a professional or high budget film the viewer would expect to see the production company logo such as Paramount or Sony. In our group trailer the viewer sees Gaza productions which is our created production logo. In my opinion this logo shows originality and creativity on a good level. By seeing a production logo at the start of thr trailer this shows that despite the low budget it still imitates professional qualities.

In mainstream productions, viewers expect to see things like words in a professional fonts and creative ways the words are shown to the viewer so they are drawn in before the movie even starts. As you can see in the video that ive embedded that the title sequence is of a professional standard, however in our low budget title sequnce, one of the downfalls is that in our trailer the title sequence does not look professional.

In the mainstream film that is featured in this blog, shows that it has professional editing because viewers expect to see nice tight shots which draw them in and gain their attention. However in our film, there is not much of avariety of shots which is a disadvantage.

Evaluation-What kind of media instituition might distribute your media product and why? How will you attract/adress your audience?

Here is a video clip of myself and another member of my group. In this video we are discussing our marketing skills and how we would promote our film.

Evaluation-Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product?

As you can see through the two main clips. You can see that my skills have improved allot. For example our camera work has become more stead it also know establish shots from a variety of different angels. I have also learnt how to make the shots more continuous for example now the shots flow more easier and they connect to next shot. You can also tell that my skills have improved is due to the fact that now i have now learnt how to add a sound track to my clips. Because my first clips did not have a soundtrack it had audio. Another skill that has progressed is the type of lighting used. In my first clip there are many different lighting levels however in the second clip the lighting stays the same throughout the whole clip to make it look much more professional. However one thing i could improve on in is my editing skills. This is because even though my final cut of my thriller title sequence looked good at the beginning i believe that towards the end some of the cuts were not slick enough and happened to fast. On a whole though i believe that i have done very well and that my opening looked quite professional considering the time scale i had to do it in. You can also clearly see that my skills have improved extremely.

Evaluation 2 - How does your media represent particular social groups ?

In our thriller opening, a character was introduced to the audience, it resembled someone of a modern day voodoo enthusiast, who takes practices in the art of black magic to achieve her goals. this low budget student film portrays many charcteristics which can be associated with certain social groups, whereby we aim that it can be positive though ca be percieved as stereotypical.

Though on the picture featured the character iis not shown in full, this shows mysteriousness which is associated with people who practice voodoo. Also, we get a sense of eeriness because her hand is clasping the book. Social groups that can be associated with this ind of theme would be african people because as i am of african origin, ive been taught that in certain parts of african black magic is practised. Also this is illustrated by the use of afrcan materials which have deep, rich colours suitable for a tribal mise en scene.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? How will you attract/ adress your audience? (Evaluation question 3 & 4)

(The Screen on the Green)
To me my title sequence is a masterpeice but in reality it's a low budget student video. The kind of institution that would distribute my title sequence would be well known social networking websites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, then maybe after being viewed and liked by people on the internet it would make it's way to video sharing websites such as YouTube and Vimeo.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gwcg18UduKg -(This clip is proof that low budget student films can eventually make their way to video sharing sites such as YouTube)
The interenet is virtually the only way i could distribute and market my title sequence to potentially meet a global audience, because there wouldn't be enough funding to show it on television or a billboard. People would see and hear about my title sequence through word of mouth, social networking sites, posters and things like BlackBerry messages. The type of places that would show my title sequence would be community cinemas like The Screen on the Green (Where the whole years title sequences where shown and i got too view and comment on peoples short films). The type of audience it would attract would be a young social crowd aged around 15-25 just interested in seeing films made the community and supporting colleges that give their students a chance display their work in real world.
To conclude organistaions that support young children and young adults would almost definetley promote films like this, beacuse it exposes young people's talents and shows what skills can be learnt when doing certain subjects in college.

Who would be the audience for your media product? (Evaluation question 5)

My target audience is 15-25 because the title sequence is quiet a mature theme which some young viewers may find hard to grasp the concept. The type of person who would watch this film to me would be like this: "Malcom, 23 works in a electronic game shop, likes to watch different genres of DVD's his favourites are alien films, phycological thrillers and horror films. He shops north face and bilabong and doesn't have much of a socail life, he one day aspires to be a film director he's a big of Quentin Terition"

How does your media product represent particular social groups? (Evaluation question 2)

(This is a still picture from my title sequence even though it doesn't have a visible character it's still very similar to the picture below. The dominant red colours are the first thing the audience will see, and the women are basically representing the same thing, dark spiritual magic)

(This is an image of a vodoo priestess it's the kind of people/group my title sequence is trying to represent, the props in this picture are kind of similar to the ones used in my title seqence. The colours are almost the same aswell there colourful and dull at the same time)

My title sequence doesn't represent any particular social groups but if you want to put it into that context, you could say that it represents a certain type of people for example my films main theme is voodoo so people interested in voodoo are generally black and come from afro/carribean tribal backgrounds.
Even though the title sequence has no speaking or any characters the audience can tell that the hand belongs to a jealous woman, maybe a priestess of some kind. I think people who are generally interested in voodoo will like the use of props and the mise en scene because it's mystical and not something you see everyday.

Evaluation-How does your media product represent particular social groups?

In my thriller title sequence opening it did not have any particular representaion of one person. This was because we did not show the characters faces or body, we only showed the Voodoo girls hand. We did this because we did not want to constrate on a character we wanted to build and create a tense atmosphere which would make the audience want to know more. Even though we did not show a sterotypical chracter, we represented a social group by using our props and mise en scene. The social group we tried to portay was african witch craft/Vodoo. Our shots of the alter represented how some people have sterotypical belifes. For example; if you are african then you must be able to do vodoo. Our shots represented a jealious young girl being a typical witch doctor/vodoo impress. We showed this by having strange props such as the traditional african material and the voodoo bowl with all the different ingeridents going inside it. I believe through our camera work, mise en scene & sound we managed to portray the sterotypical voodoo impress and that she was doing something mysterious & evil. Here is image of the type of chracter we was trying to create =]

What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product? (Evaluation question 6)

This is a power point presentation of all the skills and technologies i have learnt.

Evaluation 3 What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? how will you attract/address your audience?

This is an example of a student who has also completed a short title sequence. They have posted it onto youtube and it has received 1300 views. By posting their video on youtube they have attracted a wider range of audiences, thousands of people use youtube everyday.

Although its a low budget student video, i believe My short movie opening could be promoted in a similar way and distributed by various amounts of media institutions. It could be released at a film festival, on specific BBC websites, facebook, youtube, and small film websites. To attract my target audience i would post bulletins on m facebook advertising my film with a link to youtube. I would also post my video to BBC's teenage website 'slink' which will appeal to my target audience. To ensure i have advertised y movie to its full potential, i would e-mail my friends and family the movie and have an option to leave constructive feedback .

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product? (Evaluatuion question 7)

This is my title sequence, i thought it would be relevant to upload this video for question 7 because it's an overview of everything that i have learnt. I've learnt how to use a camera, use Mac software such as LiveType Pro etc, upload videos and images to blog and most importantly i've learnt how make a short film on my own with no experience.

This video is also very relevant it's the first excersise my group and i did preparing for actually making the title sequence. This is a match cut video we was focusing on matching the shots so they flow well. This was good practice beacsue it got us handling the camera and being precise with the footage we got, it also showed me how hard it would be to make a title sequence because it took a long time to make both videos and they are both only a couple of minutes.

Whilst doing this coursework i have actually learnt a lot, i learnt simple things such how to convert pictures and videos to JPEG and how to play back shots that i've recorded on the camera, how to set up a tripod and what words like continuity and animatics mean. I have to admit that working with all the different types of technologies has been difficult because theres so much to remember and it gets quite confusing. When it came to things like Finalcut Pro, Live Type and Soundtrack Pro it was very much trial and error, matching shots perfectly was very hard beacuse if it didin't flow well when editing i had to go back to the camera and re-shoot, aslo matching the music to the shots was difficult because if it didn't sound right i would have to fade out the music to restart it. When editing in Live Type it was tiring because the video was quite longer than intended and there was only about 8 credits so i had to evenly space out the credits with the different shots so it flowed well. I liked learning about different shot types, and i enjoyed the very first match cut filming task because it shows you that theres more to a camera than just poinitng it at what your filming and pressing playt. Different shot types have a big effect on how well a shot looks for example long shots are good for showing an important character and behind the shoulder shots allow the viewer to see what the characters are seeing. When it came to blogging i thought it would be just standard writing about what i had done but it was more than that, i had to experiment with different things such uploading videos and making montages. With the blogging i believe i could have done better by uploading a range of technologies but i did have troubles, for example i couldn't upload my recordings after several attempts and some software wasn't compatible with blogger and couldn't be rendered. Overall i think i gained quite a lot of skills from doing this coursework so if i was to do it again i would be more confident in what im doing. One big imporatnt thing i've learnt from this is to make a good film or title sequence you have to start with a simple idea, then all the camera work and editing will make it better.

Evaluation 2 How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our title sequence does not represent any particular social group as we have know dialogue or characters, but the connotations of a young, ethnic women practicing voodoo/ witchcraft are shown throughout, Our main character would look like the young woman in the image shown. Mise en scene is also very strong in our pice again allowing the target audience to recognise the voodoo theme.

Evaluation 5- Who would be the audience for your media product ?

This is a montage of images that being used to represent the typical viewer. In my opinion the typical viewer would be female and dress in boho chic. The viewer would be interested in the kind of cultural themes which are included in the title sequence.

In terms of our typical viewer there isnt a particular race because we think that viewers of all races can watch it. however the title sequence does resemble films from Nollywood so people who watch Nollywood might be also be interested in our title sequence.

The certificate of age would be a 15 because we think that anyone below this age will not be able to understand the storyline.

Evaluation still image explanations.

I have chosen to compare our title sequence with 'Seven'. A lot of our ideas were also found in this gripping thriller sequence. The similarity of an evil looking hand against paper, flashing images of people and again an evil hand flicking through a book building tension. both sequences are sharp, flashing, tense and sinister.
The lighting used in both sequences is very dim.

Evaluation still image explanations.

Evaluation 3&4- What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? How will you attract/address your audience ?

This is an example of an A level media thriller trailer. This video was found on youtube and recieved approximately 472 views, which proves that this it is quite popular even though its been posted from March 27 2009, in my opinion it deserves more views because whilst watching it i was drawn in by the variety of camera shots, the terrifying mise en scene and the captivating storyline which was all compiled in the 4 minute trailer.

The internet has been used cleverly to launch this video by posting it on youtube where larger numbers of people can view it and comment on it. If they like the video then viewers may embedd the the video on their own blogs/myspaces/facebook/bebo/twitter or other websites. this cause a somewhat domino affect in the sense that when the video is availabe for more people to view the more it will spread thus increasing popularaty and even creating a somewhat cyber reputation and also obtaining a niche audience.

In terms of my media production, if it was posted on a site such as youtube then it would also obtain a niche audience as its key concepts is witchcraft, voodoo, jealousy and love. It also has a teen theme so it would attract a teenage audience. the camera in our production are clearer, whereas the shots in the example are blurry and sometimes distorted

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challange forms and convetions of real media products (Evaluation question 1, part 2)

In my title sequence mirror some shots from Se7en for example there are close up shots of someone opening a corner of a book like Se7en this shot looks suspicious it makes the viewer wonder what the person is looking at. The main titles in both my title sequence and Se7en very, very similar they’re both very plain colours on a black background this is just a clear way of presenting the title but also not giving away too much of what the film is about. Another similar shot is full shot of some ones hand in both of the title sequences the hands look a bit freaky and are in odd positions oddly shaped. Even though Se7en was the main inspiration I changed up the shots by having colour and a more obvious theme.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challange forms and convetions of real media products (Evaluation question 1)

Evaluation-In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

This is shot in my Bitter Sweet title sequence follows the same conventions as the feature film "Seven". Here i thought the following shots looked similar due to the fact that they are both close up shots of books. This is also because both of these shots come from a low angle shot, which looks really effective rather than having a normal close up shot of a prop. In addition another feature that both of the shots had in it was that the pages were being flicked by a hand. You could not see who's hand it was so that created more of a tense atmosphere.

Evaluation 8- Audience Feedback and comment

Wordle: wordle,';'; bitter sweet

Audience feed back and comments (Evaluation question 8)

Wordle: wordle,';'; bitter sweet
This is a wordle of what people thought of our title sequence. These words briefly explain what people thought of our work in one word, it's both negative and positive, its also a more creative and imaginative way to display what people thought instead of just writing it out.

Evalution- Audience Feedback and comment

In my lesson today we all gave each other feed back on how we thought the other groups in our classes "Thriller Title sequence" went. The image below is a word cloud which we created on: www.wordle.net. Here I put in all the feedback that the other groups wrote about my thriller title sequence, then the computer created a wordle of all of all of the important words that appeared in everyone comments about our work. This was just another useful way of presenting my work rather than having to much writing, it highlighted all of the key words and phrases.

The following clip below is a feed back video of what some of our different audiences thought about our thriller title sequence "Bitter Sweet".
